Brad Penn zddp lab test

I recently switched to Brad Penn High Perf 10w-30 oil in my '69 with flat tappet cam. Its available at a local distributor (and affordable $4.39/qt). I was running Valvoline VR-1 10w-30 but it's been difficult to find in stock locally.

I picked up a mail order oil test kit (about $30) from Amsoil - they use a lab called Oil Analyzers Inc. http://www.oaitesting.com/to confirm the ZDDP levels.

Both oil samples were new - right out of the can:

Penn advertises 1500ppm/1340ppm (Zinc/Phosphorous)
Results 1428ppm/1215 - a little low but close to what they advertise

The lab also red flagged Sodium (775 ppm). I called Penn and they said Sodium is part of their "additive package". After I got the results I tested some left over VR-1.

Valvoline advertises 1400ppm/1300ppm (Zinc/Phosphorous) for VR-1 (10w-30)
Results 1200ppm/1073ppm

The detergent level (Calcium) was higher on the VR-1. Both samples went to the same lab, but were tested a few weeks apart. Scans of the lab reports are attached.

I've been using the Brad Penn break-in oil lately with no problems. Good stuff IMO.

Cool, thanks.

I've been checking the Bob is the Oil Guy analysis forums to see what people are getting. Gonna try Rotella synthetic 5W-40 some time in the future....usually shows around 1350-1400 ppm zinc and they've got it at Wally World. If I hadn't already been laying out $$$ for three jugs of Mobil-1 for the daily drivers I would've picked some up the other day when I was there.

The sodium level is interesting. I was going to use VR1 but my engine builder likes Penn. hmmmm

Good thing. Sodium can mean coolant in the oil. That is how I learned I had leaking rocker studs.
