Which head bolts need sealant?

I will be removing my vortec head to search for a leak. When reinstalling it do all of the head bolts need sealant or just the ones that go into a water passage? If so which bolts go through where coolant passes? Also which sealant would be the best? I have ARP thread sealant but some of the past threads said they had problems with it the ARP stuff?

All 17 of them if a Gen I block. I use Permatex A200 Sealer. Brush it onto the bolt threads and thread it in. Clean bolt hole with lacquer thinner or BraKleen®. Drop of oil under the bolthead for a better torque.

If iron head, bring engine to operating temp, retorque bolts.
If alum, bring engine up to operating temp, let cool overnight, retorque bolts.

Re: Which head bolts need sealant?

I used the APR thread sealant on all bolts that went through to water passages, which what I was taunt you needed to do in my engine rebuilding class.

When you have the head off you can look on your block and head which bolts would need the sealer.

I used normal moly lube on the other bolts. No leaking issues here.
