Intake gasket heat riser block off failure

I made some home made heat riser block offs out of .010 stainless sheet.
They have been in around 4 years and yesterday when I took the intake off I noticed they both were ate right thru. More like burned thru. My question is what do you guys use to block off the heat riser passage ? I think there is a gasket with a block off but I haven't had any luck finding one yet.
I have a 327 with original iron heads.

Re: Intake gasket heat riser block off failure

The problem is the localized heat on the sheet(s); nothing is behind the sheet to dissipate the heat.

The best solution is to install a manifold with no crossover, the heat is spread about the manifold.

You could machine pockets into the manifold to 'fit' steel sheets (A36) and then clamp on the manifold onto the heads.

No I am talking about a heat riser on the rt exhaust pipe, just below the manifold,
it is to send extra heat thru the crossover, to help warm up the intake, and help the divorced choke.

His pictures shows the car has headers installed, at least the ones I seen.

Does it really need to be blocked if you have headers? Will the plenum stay cooler somehow? To what extent?

Re: Intake gasket heat riser block off failure

The exhaust port in the head actually has an exit to the intake manifold and it crosses over to the other side so it can speed warm up.
I dont drive her in cold weather so I just as soon keep that heat out of there and keep the carb cooler.

How about if I have a pro weld in a 1/4 " aluminum plate in that port and recess it a bit so it doesn't touch the head.

Re: Intake gasket heat riser block off failure

Jerry,
Exhaust gas is pretty corrosive, especially if the engine is run on short trips most of the time. Back in the 70's we used to cut a pc out of a beer can and use it and never had any issues, but it was pretty rare for a manifold to stay on for 4 years without having it off to mess with something I would not worry about it too much, put in a new block off and call it a day.

Re: Intake gasket heat riser block off failure

Bill I had .010 stainless shim stock in there and both got ate up in 4 years.
Someone must make a gasket with block offs already in them.
I'd be ok with just sticking them in .
