Big block headers?

I'm in need of new long tube headers and while i was looking for them, i noticed that one side of my headers reaches a little bit further than the other side. Like maybe half a foot. Are all headers like this? I was lookin through summit and noticed some long headers had one side longer than the other. I ask this cuz I was gonna buy an exhaust kit (Summit Racing SUM-680101)and didn't know if the unevenness of the headers would mess with the fitment of the kit.

On another note, everytime i look for long headers for a 79 camaro with a big block i could never find anything. everything is for small blocks. There looks to be plenty of room in the engine bay for regular 454 mark iv truck headers. Any suggestions on either of these issues?.. Thank u guys.

Jay.

I'm not sure any exhaust kit like that will be a direct bolt-on. You would just have to use a sawz-all and cut the pipe to accomodate the longer header. Check out Sanderson headers. Excellent tech service and good guys.

Re: big block headers?

yeah i figured it wouldn't be a direct bolt on but i didn't want more of a hassle if one side of the headers is longer than the other.

I get 28 different header combos when I search Summit for 79 Camaro with 454 motor...

Smile Re: big block headers?

GM stopped installing big blocks in Camaro's around 1973. An install in a '79 would be a custom job. The best thing to do is to look for Headers that fit an early '70's Camaro as the 2nd generation Camaro's were from 1970 - 1981. The engine mounts did change to the clam shell type in the early to mid '70's. This may or may not be an issue fitting Big Block headers to a newer sub-frame.

69 Camaro -originally a LM1 car. 327, Edelbrock E-streets, hooker, DUI performance distributors, ultradyne cam, stewart, TRW etc. Vintage Air, AGR steering, Corbeau GTSII seats, 700R4 transmission, 12-bolt w/Eaton 4.11:1

Re: big block headers?

The Hooker regular comp headers fit from 70 thru 81.In 1973 they change to the clamshell mounts and if you use these mounts wtih the Hooker reguar comp header(not super comps} you need to trim on corner off the engine bracket half of each motor mount. You can also switch to earlier mounts, but it will require drilling the correct holes in the frame. It is easier just to trim your stock mounts. It is just a drop in swap.
