Intake manifold question, Pontiac

I am building a 400 Pontiac, 6x heads, [email protected], .460 lift, engine for a customer and was wondering: How much better would an aftermarket intake be than a factory one?

I have several cast iron 4bbl intakes that we could use but I don't want to if there would be a noticeable difference if we got an aftermarket one.

6x heads are low compression heads, don't bother with an aftermarket intake. Put the stock one back on. Using the Edelbrock performer as an example, you would not notice any gains.

Re: Intake manifold question, Pontiac

We just built a 400 4bbl for a customer with a 69 gran prix model sj, ours had a lil head work though?
and ran the edl 7156 performer rpm intake it was $220.00 from summit or jegs? sounds like you need a edl-2156 its close to a stock, with a few improvements..it sure does look better than the stock one!

Re: Intake manifold question, Pontiac

Jim Butler is a great guy, I bought my 65 GTO from him back in 1987 before he really hit it big. A performer intake works fine on a 400 although as stated it will not perform any better than the stock factory intake and a well tuned quadrajet. I ran a 400 in my 76 Trans Am with a set of #16 GTO heads, the good old 068 cam and the stock intake and rejetted stock quadrajet and the car really hauled ***. The performer will save you some weight but you could save your money and use it for some other part you need. I run a 455 Pontiac with an Isky solid lifter cam, 2 600 Edelbrocks on an Edel. intake with a 4 speed and 3.31 rear, very nice street car.
