383 question

a friend of mine picked up a freshly rebuilt 383. I went and checked it out for him yesterday and all he knows about it is it is a 350 cast block, internally balanced with a 400 crank and it has a 400 damper on front. we are confused on what flywheel needs to go on it. The guy that built it owned a machine shop and moved and does not know how to contct him. Any clue on the flywheel?

Re: 383 question

If the engine is internally balanced, then you would need a neutral balanced harmonic balancer and flywheel.

If there is a 400 h/bal installed, then the engine may be externally balanced and need a 400 h/bal and a 400 flywheel. Otherwise, a great imbalance will be present.

One way to check is remove the oil pan and visually check the counterweights for Malloy metal studs installed and check for a complete weld about the circumference of the slug to ensure the slug stays in place.

Another way is to check the balance card for the items balanced and used. Most shops will fill out the card and give to the customer, but don't always get passed along to the next owner.

Re: 383 question

Most 'cheap' strokers with 5.7" rods use an external balance and your harmonic balancer points to it being externally balanced so if I have to "GUESS" then it's externally balanced and you'll be needing a "400" flywheel. If he believes that the machine shop was the one that installed it and it wasn't installed by the guy that had it built then I'd take the chance on the 400 flywheel - a quick test rev really won't damage anything and if it's not right you'll have a nasty vibration upon a rev at mid to higher RPM's and you'll know right away that he'll have to swap to the neutral balanced stuff before really running it.
