350 SBC swap to 496 BBC

I am looking to swap a 350 SBC with a 496 BBC. Any links on what is involved with this swap on '69 rs/ss. Figure new headers; new pulley, assessory, and hose set ups; upgraded radiator; fuel pump/tank. Anything I am not thinking about? Will the original sub-frame take a 496 BBC?

Keeping the same tranny? Then you would need another crossmember and driveshaft. You
need to get Big Block subframe mounts and engine mounts, search this site for part numbers. Upgraded front coil springs and sway bar.

Engine mounts, dizzy HEI will not fit with BBC. heater core and cover, clutch, bellhousing, flywheel if running a manual trans., ign. wires, alt. and p/s brackets, starter to name a few things.

Re: 350 SBC swap to 496 BBC

It is a pretty straight forward swap as big blocks were optional in camaros from 67 to 72.Make sure you use the correct bigblock frame stands and trans. cross member so that you do not have any header clearance issues. Also check your fuel line size running from the tank to the pump.If you have a true ss car, you should have at least a 3/8'' line, which should be sufficient for most street engine fuel requirements provided you are not going with forced induction or NOS.Probably your biggest challenge will be keeping the rat cool.I recommend a dual 1 1/4'' core aluminum radiator from griffin or any one of the top manufacturers. These radiators are rated to 600 h.p. cooling capacity. As for pulley's and brackets, all are available from many of the resto. companies. One final note,be aware that if you elect to go with tall valve covers, there is a good chance you will have clearance issue's with the wiper motor and or the power brake booster if you are running them.Good luck.

Re: 350 SBC swap to 496 BBC

Thank you for all the good tips - a couple of these would have got me in trouble (e.g., tall v. short valve covers....!)
