302 Piston Identification

I can't find the info on this piston that was reused in my engine that was rebuilt about 8 years ago. I do remember checking the part # at the time and I seem to recall that it was the factory standard bore piston 11:1 for the 302. Can anybody verify it from this poor pic? Thanks.

Re: 302 Piston Identification

Might take the number to an older GM parts counter and ask one of the older Parts people there to look in the older parts books.

Or get a better picture of the number or write the number here and maybe one of the other members could look it up in their catalog.

Re: 302 Piston Identification

The only way is to pull it apart to get the #, so I was hoping the piston expert (whoever that is) might be able to identify it.

I compared it to the stock 302 piston photo that is in JM'S Z/28 book and it looks exactly the same, although I can't make out the part #'s in that photo either.

Re: 302 Piston Identification

The original part number from chevy was 3946876. It's for an 11:1 standard bore and was sold with the pin.

TRW had pistons also but I dont have that number anymore.

JohnZ:

Part of my confusion on the part # was ths issue that you point out. The Chevy part # and the piston part # are different and that lead me to initially believe I had a different piston but I remember somehow tying the two together. Is that a TRW part #??

I kept looking at the faint #'s in the picture and they didn't appear to be 3946876-that's because they are 3927172. Can you shed any light on this? Thanks.

Re: 302 Piston Identification

I believe the forging number was the same for the 11:1 and the 12.5:1 piston. The 11:1 piston is what was offered in the 302. The part number is different for the two pistons, but the forging number was the same. Since it's a solid dome, heavy, you can cut the 12.5 dome down to make an 11:1 piston. The pic you have appears to be the 11:1 piston to me.
