5qt oil pan??

This sounds crazy and trust me I'm not.. I have spent thousands of dollars with professionals who tell me I'm OK

I put a summit 5 qrt pan on my BBC and put 5 qrts in and a new filter... so I go out to check it pull the dip stick and it just at the tip were it says add...looks like it needs another qrt.. So question is.. On a 5 qrt pan does it mean it can hold 5 or is that the max you should put in with filter?? Or should I have put in 6 Qrts ( extra quart for the filter)

Re: 5qt oil pan??

Sounds to me that the pan contains 5 qts and the oil filter holds 1 more for a total of 6. I'm not crazy either just.....what for it.....just 'reelknots'!

No windage tray.. Engine is stock... But I did read that the pf1218 filter holds a qrt... So I guess I need to add another qrt to bring it up to full 5 qrts in the pan.....Right?

Re: 5qt oil pan??

I've often wondered what would happen if you poured to quarts over the full mark, didn't know it, and drove the car? Would a main seal fail?

Both optimists and pessimists contribute to society. The optimist invents the automobile, the pessimist seat belts, head rests, disc brakes, and air bags.

Re: 5qt oil pan??

If you have the right stick for the tube, pour in the amount and later check the stick for air bubbles on the stick. If bubbles appear, one qt too much.
A tall filter, like a PH8 Fram, holds one qt, short ones hold a pint.

Re: 5qt oil pan??

Too much oil in the pan will have the crank plowing though your 10w-30 costing you power. Which pan do you have?
