Distributor gear question

My new 496 has a billet cam with a cast gear. I bought a MSD #8366 distributor and am trying to find out if I can use the gear that came with it or if I need to replace it. I know that I need a "melonized" gear but can't find any info if the gear that came with it needs to be replaced. I have not had a change to call MSD so hoping someone here could answer.
Summit has this part:
http://www.summitracing.com/parts.aspx?sku=MSD-8561

The gear looks the same as the one on my distributor but is it?

Re: Distributor gear question

I would call MSD to make sure. I was interested in the 8394 from them, but wasn't sure if I needed to buy the melonized gear. Called MSD, and the guy said it is already installed on that distributor. Very polite, and virtually no wait on hold.

Re: Distributor gear question

All of the MSD distributors right down to the lowly Street Fire are supposed to come with a melonized gear if it says "steel" on the gear material on Summit. I've got a Street Fire HEI I've run on both an old hydraulic flat tappet and a cast hydraulic roller.

I'll call MSD today to verify. Here is the distributor that I have:

Re: Distributor gear question

I called them and it does come with the melonized gear. One less thing to buy!
