Well I noticed the other day that since I installed the BB... That the air cleaner doesn't fit centered in the opening of my cowl hood...

It's like 1" over to the passengers side... Is this normal??

I would need to get a real small air cleaner if I wanted it to fit in the cowl opening..

That's normal, BB frame stands and tranny cross member move the engine about 1" towards the pass side.

A filter should fit in the opening, but I let others confirm.

i agree--but usually in my exsperience the filter still fits

How big of a filter round can you use??

Well measured the cowl opening 15" measured the generic air cleaner 14" that should give me a half inch gap all the way around... Install big block kicks engine over 1" ... I'm off set on the cowl opening by half an inch....

Am I correct or am I missing something??

So if I wanted it to fit in the cowl opening I would need a 13" or 12" air cleaner... Sound correct??

What size air cleaners are the BB guys running to get up into the cowl opening?? Diameter and height??

A 14" diameter air cleaner will fit the diameter of the cowl opening in the hood. As far as a height for the air cleaner.....that depends on carburetor flange height of your intake. I have a Weiand Team G intake on my BBC and I had to use a drop base air cleaner with a filter height of 2".

Dave the cowl opening is 15" the air cleaner is 14"(gives a half inch clearance all around if it's centered on a sb) Now move the the engine over 1" to the passenger side by converting to a BB... your now a full 1" over to passenger side..and that puts you a half inch outside the cowl opening

My hood closes fine because my setup now will fit under a stock hood but the 14" air cleaner no longer fits centered in the cowl opening it's a half inch to far to the passengers side... If I wanted to put a taller air cleaner on... I would need to swap to a 12"...other wise the 14" cleaner will hit the lip of the cowl opening on the passenger side...

Is this normal or is something off?? The math makes sense...doesn't it??

My 14 inch air cleaner sits clears the cowl opening fine on my BB. I had to use a drop base air cleaner because I am running a Victor Jr intake.

I purchased the hood from Classic Industries and it has a 15 inch opening. My Camaro was originally a big block and when I purchased the hood I just bolted it on, never thought twice about it but I did have to use a drop base air cleaner to clear.

I don't know.. It doesn't make sense... If in fact the engine is pushed over to the passenger side 1" the air cleaner should move over also.. 1" so the 14" air cleaner should be off set by 1" making it 1/2 inch to far to the right...

I took some measurements and the cowl opening is actually 15 1/4 inches. I have a 3/4 inch gap between the air cleaner (14 inch) on the drivers side and a 1/2 gap on the passengers side. The cowl opening in the hood is 1/2 inch off center towards the passengers side. My engine is 3/4 inch off centered towards the passengers side.

The air cleaner on a ZL2 hood doesn't go "up into the cowl opening"; it has a flexible rubber seal between the outside diameter of the air cleaner base and the bottom of the hood surface.

Hey Bill thanks for all the pictures and measurements... Big help... My cowl hole is centered in the hood... I used some playdou and determined I'm offset from the cowl hole about a 1/4 inch.....
