BBC rpm?

How high can you rev a stock 1986 454 BBC 2 bolt main... And not risk it coming apart..

Thanks in advance

Re: BBC rpm?

I would limit to 5500 rpm, maybe. It has stroke to make up for loss of hp and torque is the 'work'.

X2 on what Everett said.
The big heavy valves are the limiting factor. You need good springs to go beyond 5500.

Re: BBC rpm?

Its going to lay down and sound like a can full of marbles before it kicks a rod out.Expect this to happen after 5k rpm.
Get a grip on valve train control..and a cast crank 2 bolt will survive at 600 hp and 6500 rpm reliably.

Re: BBC rpm?

george is right on and everyone else--no reason too--short shifting will aways leave a better number in your case

Re: BBC rpm?

Say you have an 8:1 Static Compression BBC with Cast Crank. You can add a Holley 750/Edelbrock RPM, 268H-10 Cam something like CC 924 Dual Springs and Roller Rockers and Headers you will be able to spin her to 6200rpm.

Re: BBC rpm?

Agree with most the posts above. Build her to shift at 5500 and you'll be perfectly fine. At the track, I've seen numerous BB's with expensive valve trains and supposed "bullet-proof" rotating assemblies that spit parts at 6000 RPM. BB valve-trains are heavy and a 4.00 stroke (or 4.25" with a 496) is hell on BB parts at 6000+ RPM.

Re: BBC rpm?

If your going for under 6000rpm I would choose a 266H-10 Cam with an 8:1 Static Compression but Roller Rockers and 924 Springs are still a must then top her off as I previously mentioned.

NOTE: If you go Roller Rockers, I recommend either Comp Cam Pro MAGS or Harland Sharp with 2" ARP Rocker Studs. The Stock 1.88" OEM Studs are no good with Roller Rockers and are probably the biggest reason for BBC Roller Rocker Failures.

Re: BBC rpm?

My Rev Limiter is set at 6700 rpm with a plus .030" SR 454 & I've hit over 7000 a few times with a M21 to 3.08's or 3:31's. Scary because I'm just going TOO FAST when the 150 Mph Speed-O pegs and I'm only 1/2 way through 4th.

I'm running moderately ported 2.19/1.9 781 castings with a Super Valve job, Manley Ultra-Lite Pro Flows, 830 Dp 4 Corner Annular Booster on top of an Edelbrock Air Gap. My rotating assemble is Forged with a 10.25:1 Static Compression & run the LUN-502A1LUN, Crower HIPPO's and CC-933 Springs. Engine is Specked OEM Stock.

Would love to have Alu-Heads to get me around the corners faster ;o)

Re: BBC rpm?

yep maybe in alterd state -my shift is 7200 on my 468 but its extreme --the track will show that there is no reason unless you got a all out set up to turn a big block to any high rpm-the above set up shifting at 6300 would yield a faster time the 830 is the awesome carb for that set up

Re: BBC rpm?

Another thing I might add if your running an 8:1 454 with either the 266 or 268H-10 cam you can not run a rear gear ratio higher then 3.73's as you will be rung out before the end of the 1/4. You need at least a 9.5 Static to hit 6500 rpm and reach the end of the 1/4 with 4:10's. With that 8:1 266H-10, 3.55 to 3.31's will give you best all around driving experience; however, if you like to cruise you can't beat 3.31's to 3.08's without going to an overdrive. The Mill is a low end torque monster to 5500 rpm and will not stop revving until you break something in the valve train. As I say: ARP 2" Rocker Studs, CC-924 Springs and descent Roller Rockers will get you to 6200 rpm with a STD Holley 750Dp.

I've never noticed much of a difference between a 427 Vs 454 in the way they like to rev. I would think the 427 will rev higher with the same heads because they pump less air then the 454 given the same rpm. For instance: You can rev a 302 to 8G's with stock 291 castings and with a little work rev a 327 to 8 G's but fall flat above 6000rpm with a 350 or 400.

"BBC rpm" Great Post ;o)
