67 327 Harmonic Balancer Issue

I went to replace the fan belt today and noticed the harmonic balancer turns about an inch without the crankshaft moving. I have never seen one break like that. Odd enough, it still seems to run fine. I guess it is time to replace it. Anyone else ever seen this?

Oh yeah. The elastomer between the hub and outer ring gets old and comes apart.

Re: 67 327 Harmonic Balancer Issue

If you have a low horsepower 327-210HP, even 4-bbl-250HP or whatever the value may be, the h/bal is just keyed with a press fit onto the snout. Yes, as Steiner mentions, the elastomer does dry rot or deteriorate.

Could be the key has broken and the press fit has given way.
A new h/bal and key would work, but also, a h/bal bolt with washer, several companies market them, as the snout keyway is pretty strong, but the bal keyway is toast.

Install the new h/bal, pulley(s), and follow up with the bolt and torque to about 60-65 ft/lbs.

How hard would it be to drill and tap the crank snout in the car?

Re: 67 327 Harmonic Balancer Issue

It's not as hard as you think, patience is the key.
Measure the inside diameter for a 7/16-20 tap and the depth. It may be at the right diameter already. If not, you may have to use a right angle drill and reduced shank drill bits and work your way up to the diameter needed in 1/64 inch steps. Use plenty of oil. Drill a short distance, maybe 3/16 inch, then back off to break the chips.
Turn the tap 1/4 turn, then back off 1/2 turn to break the chips.
Start with a starting tap, then a body tap, and finish with a bottoming tap.
Get to the bottom, stop. Removing a broken tap is a pain.

Which key would I need? I see they come in short and long.

If I remember correctly, 3/32 inch woodruff key, a half moon shaped.
Check you're application at time of disassemble.
