Oil Leak Possible Rear Main??

I have replaced both valve cover gaskets, resealed the oil sending unit and the oil leak was still there. It seems like my intake is leaking, dripping down the back of the engine onto the starter, then the headers etc. I know you fellas have probably seen this before.

I cannot spot or feel any oil on the back of the manifold or block.

Re: Oil Leak Possible Rear Main??

Hi Frank,

Degrease and clean everything real well and let dry. Use a telescoping inspection mirror and a good flashlight and run the engine (first make sure your PCV is working properly) to find the source of the leak.
I don't think an intake manifold would generate that much oil to run down the block unless you had a ventilation issue.
What type of valve covers are you using, some can get distorted from over tightening and perpetually leak. Good luck.

Re: Oil Leak Possible Rear Main??

Hi Bobby thanks for the tip. I might have silly question but I do not have pcv valve just a breather. How would I make sure that I have positve crankcase ventilaton or it is working properly. I have stamped proform valve covers.

Re: Oil Leak Possible Rear Main??

Frank,

Sorry for the delay, just make sure the breather is not clogged, pull it and see if you can blow through it. Also make sure where the breather goes in the engine is clear too, pull the breather and run the engine, you should see and feel crankcase gasses exiting.

You could always add a pcv system. Pcv valve in one valve cover gromet to carb base or intake manifold and a breather in the other valve cover. It uses engine vacuum to pull gasses from crankcase into intake manifold to be re burnt in combustion chamber.

What year engine do you have?
