Big Block

Let me start by saying I don't know a thing about motors. I was looking for a 427 to put in a 67 camaro but they are out of my price range.I found a good deal on a 396 so what I want to know is if I put a 427 decal on the air cleaner can you tell the difference, I want it to look like a big blook 427.Will it look the same or to I have to keep looking for a 427. Thank you.

Re: Big Block

No external difference. Block ID numbers only will vary. You can actually make the 396 in to a 427 with a oversize bore lot of old drag racers use to do that.

Re: Big Block

Get a 454 and do the same thing, easier to find. They all look the same on the outside.

Re: Big Block

The 454 block better be a Mark IV..the gen 5 and 6 would be a dead give away.By all means rebadge the 396 to 427.Only you will know as they are both internally balanced. If you go mark IV 454..keep enquiring fingers away from the backside of your harmonic dampner unless you balanced internally with Mallory metal.

Re: Big Block

If the car was originally a smallblock there is a lot of stuff to change - it gets expensive !

You will need to use a short water pump and all the related brackets for the same. In '67, that is the combination they used. This will put the alternator on the drivers side. In '69 they switched to the long water pump and the alternator on the passenger side. BB brackets for the short pump will be harder to find, but they are out there. It's cost you some $$ over the long pump brackets, though. There are a bunch of differences between SB and BB Camaros. If you are wanting it to look correct, it'll cost you some more $$. Do a search here. There is plenty of discussion on butting BBs in cars that didn't originally come with them.

Experience...... It's what you get when you didn't get what you wanted.
