head bolt question

Are there supposed to be washers under the head bolts?

I see on some sites where the sell head bolts they show washers in the pictures.

Re: head bolt question

Factory assembled engines are not equipped with washers. (OEM engineers obviously did not take our kind of activity into account.) ARP headbolts for Chevy applications are sold with washers included. They are effective at avoiding galling in the area of contact between the head of the bolt and the cylinder head during torquing and they help the assembler achieve consistent torque pressures. They are especially valuable on aluminum heads. Washers are a plus in any application that is anticipated to have the heads removed frequently.

If I understand your question correctly, the answer is, yes, the surface faces are parallel ground. I buy those washers in a variety of sizes in bulk packages from ARP for that very reason.

Re: head bolt question

I would use washers only on aluminum heads for anti-galling purposes. They are not needed on iron heads.
