Temp port hole

I have a set of Vortec heads. They are at my builder. Question is the hole in the head looks to small for my current temp sensor. It is the brass nut over the element. Are all the holes the same as I did not pull the blue plug out of the head to check, this just crossed my mind. Want to know so I can get my new set. Thanks, Jerod

Re: Temp port hole

It's probably a smaller hole than the older engines had.

You can find an adapter to make it fit (I think) or you can buy a thermostat housing that your original sender will thread into. Some aftermarket intake manifolds have the correct theads on an extra hole as well.

Re: Temp port hole

Great, I do see there is a port on the intake that will fit my current temp probe. I did not know you can put them into the intake. Thanks, Jerod

Re: Temp port hole

Older hole is 1/2 inch NPT; newer hole is 3/8 inch NPT.
Do not use adapter as it will place the sensor out of the coolant and an incorrect temp, ie, cooler, will be indicated.
You could have the shop retap for 1/2 inch NPT. Take along the sending unit for them to use to as a guide.
Or, just install into ytour intake as suggested.

Re: Temp port hole

Installing to the intake will give an accurate reading.

Temp senders were in the intake manifold from 1955-1967.
