60's 327 Vette motor

Hello everyone. Ive come across a 60's (cant remember exact year) fuely motor a friend has and he said he would sell it for $750. But he doesnt have the fuel injection anymore. He said it had almost 40,000 miles when he pulled it in the early 90's out of a wrecked vette barn find. I have seen the motor and it really does look good factory dome pistons, rods, heads and crank all look to be in good shape. Question is, is it worth $750?

Re: 60's 327 vette motor

Might be worth it. What is the code on the front pad of the engine block? Year also is somewhat important. Casting number and date will be back on the bellhousing flange area.

68 Camaro SS 396 - 468 BBC now, M21, 12 bolt 3.73 coded housing but w/ 3.31 gears.

Re: 60's 327 vette motor

As Bryon suggested, find the code on the pass side deck pad just above the water pump and it will tell all.
It would be at least a '62, the year 327's were introduced along with 10DN alternator.
Delco-Remy cast iron distributor come with it?.

Re: 60's 327 vette motor

the small journal steel crank would be worth some money....probably has 461X heads too, they were a good HP head back inthe day. Collectors and NHRA racers may have some interest in them.

Smile Re: 60's 327 vette motor

Just a word of CAUTION : There were Thousands of 327's that came with the Double hump heads. These heads are called Fuellies by many people. It doesn't mean the engine had fuel injection or that it was even in a vette. It would be really easy to unbolt an intake, and call it a fuelly with the injection system gone. The only way to be sure what it is (or was) is by getting those numbers.

My 327 had fuelly (double hump) heads and it came out of a 1965 Impala !

69 Camaro -originally a LM1 car. 327, Edelbrock E-streets, hooker, DUI performance distributors, ultradyne cam, stewart, TRW etc. Vintage Air, AGR steering, Corbeau GTSII seats, 700R4 transmission, 12-bolt w/Eaton 4.11:1

Re: 60's 327 vette motor

these days a generic rebuildable core 350 is going for $300, so yeah, an actual fuelie 327 is worth $750..

you don't plan sincerity.
you have to make it up on the spot.

wanna hear about 20 years ago when i was too smart to know any better?

Re: 60's 327 vette motor

Was there a build difference between an FI vs carb'd. 327? Don' think so.

Re: 60's 327 vette motor

It's only worth more money as a fuelie if the pad stamp suffix says it's a fuelie; without that pad stamp (and a Corvette VIN derivative stamp next to it), it's just another 327. The L-76 (327/365hp) was exactly the same engine as the fuelie, except it had a carb instead of the F.I. unit.

Re: 60's 327 vette motor

Hey guys sorry about not replying I have been without a computer for a couple months my old one was on its last leg. I don't have the numbers off it but the guy who has it swears it was out of a fuellie. He said he pulled it himself after buying the car for parts. He said it was a black on black 4 speed car that was pretty much fully loaded but was wrecked really bad long ago. I can get the numbers this weekend maybe but I know it's the real deal. It really isn't for sale but he said he would sell it to me or another close friend.

I've only heard this same story hundreds of times only to find out it wasnt what they said it was. The pad stamping will tell the real story.

Right. We have to have that stamped code.

Re: 60's 327 Vette motor

I have a '62 300hp 327 (not FI) with 461 X heads in my old ford Roadster, If it IS an early vette engine, be expecting to be contacted by vette owners looking for their original engines. Its amazing how word gets out. That was my experience after an article on my roadster appeared in a mag. I think engine is an SD code or something like that. I would have probably felt obligated to sell the engine to the owner if the real car had appeared, but it didn't..and I'm glad.its a great little engine, especially with the little 280H cam

My 67 convert build in progress:
