starter gear gets stuck in flywheel.

so my starter gear just recently started getting stuck in the fly wheel. my car has been starting great every time an then i changed out my fuel system and drum brake rebuilds and first time i started it, it took a while cranking non stop for about 10 mins(mind you i did end up flooding it.....) finally it started and then it sounded like plastic broke off and now when i start it all it does it turn over maybe one time and then dead stop. ill look under and its stuck. i unstick it and then it doesnt turn over anymore. took the battery to autozone and it tested good with 70% charge. got a starter from o'reillys and installed it exactly like the last one was and went to start it, same thing, almost turned over and then dead. any ideas? i would appreciate it.

Re: starter gear gets stuck in flywheel.

Externally charge the battery, clean all battery cable connections, both ends, and add a 0.020" shim under the starter nose to block.
Last thing you want is pinion being jammed in ring gear and starter motor still engaged.
