Question Intake manifold gasket installation

Hi,
I am going to replace the intake manifold gasket. Have bought a kit from MrGasket that contains the 2 gasket for each cylinder head face and the 2 rubber gaskets for the front and end surfaces. 327 engine. Intake manifold: older Edelbrock Performer 2101. Have a few questions about the gaskets...
  1. The gaskets for the cylinder head faces has one side that is dark grey with a number (101B, I think). The other side is speckled (hope it is the right word) and contains the MrGasket logotype. Which side should be facing the intake manifold?
  2. Have seen that almost everyone says that the rubber gaskets should be scrapped and silicone should be used instead. Rubber gaskets or silicone?
  3. If the answer on Q2 is silicone. Why is it a problem to use the rubber gaskets?

Re: Intake manifold gasket installation

Just did mine a few weeks ago same set up. I used all the supplied gaskets. Put hight temp gasket sealant on both sides of all gaskets. It is red in color. A thin layer. Put extra blobs in the four corners and on top of the two front and back ones. This is where they are prone to leaking. Usually the back where you can never see it. I had no problems. Be sure to put some on the intake bolts that go all the way through or oil will seep up.
I had that problem originally also puddles on the intake. All clean now. The gaskets don't matter up or down. As long as the holes all line up.

Re: Intake manifold gasket installation

Thx,
Did also have problem with oil seeping out from the bolts. Have bought thread sealant and high temp gasket sealant so I will give it a try. If I understood you correct you did use the rubber gaskets?

Re: Intake manifold gasket installation

If you bought the Fel-Pro gaskets that already have a bead around the ports then you wouldn't need to apply any. Don't use the rubber gaskets, use Permatex High Temp RTV.
For the bolt threads use Permatex 2 non hardening sealant. Don't use silicone, it won't last. And don't apply any sealant to the intake or exhaust ports (gas) and silicone don't mix. Just apply to the water ports.

Re: Intake manifold gasket installation

If you look at the gaskets the holes will not align but one way so you will know which side of the gasket faces up. As for the rubber seals on the ends I do not use them. What happen to me is as I tighten the intake bolts the gaskets squeezed out causing a leak. The only gaskets I use on the ends is cork. Fel Pro has a gasket kit that has 2 cork gaskets that has a glued bottom. You peel off the white paper and stick it to the block. I also use Super Weatherstrip and Gasket Adhesive on the cork gaskets with some black RTV silicon in the corners.

Re: Intake manifold gasket installation

Use gasket dressing (gasgacinch) on the gaskets, hi-temp thread sealer (loctite makes a good one) on the manifold bolts and ultra black silicone for the ends (instead of the rubber gaskets) and you will have zero leaks, weeping, etc.

Good luck!

Re: Intake manifold gasket installation

Since I did get a couple of different answers I have installed the intake manifold with the rubber front and rear gaskets. Did put sealant on both sides and sealant in the corners. Will see how it ends up in a few days. Thanks all for your advices.

Thx,
Oops.. I should have seen that one earlier. However, if I will have problems I know how to fix it.
