Engine Casting Numbers

I am trying to decipher my engine's origins. The previous owner told me the engine is from the 1970s, is a small block 350, and is not original to the car (the 1969 Camaro that the engine is in was originally a six cylinder car).

In small letters and numbers stamped on the engine pad is T6U516312. In larger letters and numbers on the same pad, closer to the intake manifold,
is VO614TYU. The digit/letter following the "V" may be an "O" or a zero, I cannot tell which.

I looked these casting numbers up on the related decoding sites on the Internet and I could not identify what my numbers mean. The former owner told me the engine had four bolt mains, but I haven't wanted to drop the pan to see for myself.

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Engine Casting Numbers

VO614TYU is the assembly stamp. V meaning the engine was assembled at the Flint Plant, 06 meaning June, and 14 meaning the 14th, so your engine was assembled at the Flint Plant on June 14th. TYU comes back as a 350/4 barrel out of a 1975 van or bus. T6U516312 should be the partial VIN of the original vehicle it came out of.

Re: Engine Casting Numbers

From the partial VIN, looks like a 1976 model year vehicle. In 76, TYU was used in 20 and 30 series vans and was a 350ci/165hp.

1969 04A Van Nuys-built Z/28. Cortez Silver with dark blue interior and VE3. Sold Clippinger Chevrolet. Raced at Lions in LA.

You're welcome. Just so you know, those numbers you gave aren't the casting numbers. The casting number/casting date will be raised as they are cast into the block when poured. You can look here to see where to find them: http://www.camaros.org/drivetrain.shtml
