DZ 302 exploded the valve cover while trying to start it.

Are you sitting down? My brother has a #s matching 69Z. He was trying to start it when there was an explosion under the hood. At the same instant there was a dent in the hood! The valve cover exploded into three pieces!
Talk about ruining your day. I'm thinking one of the needle / seats in the carb must have leaked and made a lot of fumes in the oil pan / valve covers. Anyone ever hear of such a thing?

Sounds like a Nitrous backfire except for the valve cover part.

Was it the valve cover with the PCV valve in it?

Re: DZ 302 exploded the valve cover while trying to start it.

I have never heard of a cover blowing up. Not saying it didn't happen. A bad diaphragm in the fuel pump can fill the crankcase with fuel and potentially make for a bad day.

Re: DZ 302 exploded the valve cover while trying to start it.

I googled "valve cover exploded" and found similar stories like this one from other forums. Scary stuff. Regarding the above explanation, how often do fuel pump diaphragms fail? Would there be symptoms before "kablooey"?

Thanks for the tip on the fuel pump. I now remember that from many years ago when I used to wrench for a living.
It was the valve cover with the pcv valve. I have a great picture but don't see how to post it. Insurance guy coming today. Should be an interesting discussion.

...how often do fuel pump diaphragms fail?

I bet a lot more often now that we have so much ethanol mixed with our gas.

Hard to believe there's something harder on the fuel system than gas.

Re: DZ 302 exploded the valve cover while trying to start it.

I Googled after Mike Trland mentioned it as I was curious. The first one that came up was the BroncoForum and that discussion showed a metal valve cover blowout. WOW is an understatement. What damage. I can't imagine what the cast valve cover looks like. Need to post some pics. As rare as this phenomenon is now there is something else to look forward to.

I had my first Z at a local drive-In back in the mid 70's. Everything seemed fine when we left home and got there, but when the movie 'The Exorcist" was over on the way home I noticed a raw fuel smell and the fuel gauge needle was moving quite fast. I found that fuel was coming out of the small vent holes in the side of the pump. How would anyone know if you were getting fuel pumped into the oil pan? Kind of curious how rare this really is. Up until know I have never seen anything like it or heard any mention from anyone in my lifetime. Weird.

Re: DZ 302 exploded the valve cover while trying to start it.

It is easy to tell if you are getting fuel in your oil. Just pull the dip stick. The oil will be thinner, the level will be higher, and it will smell like gas. This happens more with stock style pumps , rather than the ones with a replaceable diaphragm. I have seen it happen two times, which doesn't sound like much, but there are millions of those pumps in use. Think of a drumstick hitting a drum in the same spot for thousands of times each time it is used. I have seen engines blow with a leaky NOS solenoids too.

Re: DZ 302 exploded the valve cover while trying to start it.

I had a backfire in my AAR cuda blow the breathercap off my valve cover and take a chunk out of my earlobe as it went by (someone else was cranking it). The car had sat for 3 months while I was deployed on a submarine. Obviously I had some gas fumes in the crankcase.
