Hydraulic Roller Cam Suggestion for 71 SS LS3 396/402!!!!

Sorry, I had originally posted this under second generation but I didn't know how to move the thread. So I have reposed the thread with more information I apologize in advance for posting alot. I will try my best to remove the other posting.

* As the title shows I am looking for cam suggestions for my 1971 ls3 396 engine. the engine is all numbers matching parts with the addition of headers and msd 6al kit. The cam that is currently in the engine has unfortunately had a lobe gone flat so I am trying to figure out what the best cam option for me is. I want to get something more modern so I was looking into hydraulic rollers! What I was wondering is whats the best cam that i can get for this engine the way it is now power and drive ability wise. I want something that will work well with this practically stock ls3 396 but also give me a nice power gain since I am going through the labor of replacing it in the first place. I guess let me know what yalls experiences with the hydraulic rollers are and if their are any that are really spectacular and outstanding that yall like give me a link or a part number so i can check them out and start ordering . Also this may be a dumb question but also while going through this process is it necessary to change to a full roller rocker arm or will my roller tip rocker arms work fine with the new cam?

For starters I was looking into the Thumper cams by comp cam the 283THR7 and the 291THR7 Are these any good? or the lunati barbones / vodoo cams?

The engine is completley stock as is

-Compression is belive on it is 8.5 - 9.0
-the heads are 3993820 according to research that = 1971, oval port, open chamber,113cc chamber, 402ci.
-stock cast iron intake
-Msd Ignition 6al
-Carb is the numbers matching rochester carb

Thank you guys and I appreciate yalls help!

With the relatively low CR, I wouldn't get too crazy. Plus, I'm guessing you have factory rear gearing (3.55's?).

How about this one:

I wouldn't go much bigger. I prefer single pattern cams but those heads will benefit from a split pattern.

Also, forget the Thumpr stuff unless you're into "impressive idle".

With a basically stock engine, you should stay below 220 intake duration. And the low compression only makes it worse.

If you go with a 218/224 with .510 lift, you will get a nice boost in power without a rough idle.

Just for comparison, a ZZ502 comes with a 224/232 cam. That's way too much for a stock 396.

Why not build a 454 ? Looks identical to a 396 and it's so much more fun.

Why not stroke that 454? Much funner. That is what I finally decided to do.
