383 with Comp Cams 270HR roller

Hello all,

Today I looked at a newly assemled crate engine with the following specs- High nickel 2 piece rear seal block, 383 Eagle rotatiing assembly, flat top pistons, Comp Cams 270 HR hydraulic roller cam, Comp Cams roller rockers, Edelbrock RPM Performer Air Gap intake, and MSD HEI distributor.

The cylinder heads are nothing special- Chevy 1.94/1.55 heads. Compression ratio is estimated to be 10.0 to 1.

The owner estimates the horsepower is 410 and the torque is 430.
I have my doubts with those heads and the mild specs on the roller cam.

We will most likely run a quick Fuel 680 or 700 cfm carb on this engine.

Based on the great experience level out there, does anyone have an opinion as to the horsepower and torque from this engine combination?

If I were willing to add just a little higher quality cylinder head what would you guess the horsepower and torque would be?

Thanks for your help.

Heads are really choking it a lot....

Get some 200-210cc heads with some 2.05/1.6 valves and wake that thing up
Then I'd say close to 500/480 ? (with a little more compression too)

I'd say the owner is close....no desktop dyno here.

Re: 383 with Comp Cams 270HR roller

What is the combustion chamber size? I know with my 65cc AFR's, flat tops would have put me way high in the static compression ratio department. With the longer stroke of the 383, I had to run a dished piston to get 10:1.

I agree with the others, no sense in choking it with a poor flowing head.

Re: 383 with Comp Cams 270HR roller

with the specs you are listing, I would say 350-375HP/400-430TQ is more realistic. A good set of Pro-Filer 195cc or Dart SHP 180cc Alum heads and you will be in that 430+HP/460+TQ range.
