Air filter base interfering with choke butterfly?

I have a 68 383 and I replaced the air cleaner and noticed the filter base that sets on the carburetor if not perfectly set interferes with the choke butterfly. Car wouldn't start yesterday and I figured out that the air cleaner can move just enough to cause it to no allow the choke to work.

Is this possibly the wrong air cleaner base or are they all standard? The carb is a deamon. Should I just remove some material from that base?

Is this a stock low profile base for cowl hood?

Re: Air filter base interfering with choke butterfly?

I got rid of my choke because it interfered with the air cleaner base, car starts every time.

It's not the wrong base just wrong for that Demon probably. Rather than removing material from the base which is thin to start with maybe you could modify it with a little tap tap bang bang if you know what I mean, just be careful not to distort the sealing surfaces for the filter element.

I had the same issue. Got a spacer from Summit and fixed problem perfectly.

Its a stock SS good so no cowl. I bend and did end up taking a bit of material around where it fits over the carb. I also tightened the wind nut a little more than normal so it cant move. I think it will be ok.

What spacer are you referencing ? I don't think I have enough room to go much higher.

x2 An easy fix, but be careful when you fit the base down each time you put the ab back.

Re: Air filter base interfering with choke butterfly?

Some people have the same problem with electric choke carbs & drop base air cleaners. Easiest way to fix IMO is reshaping the base with a body repair tools (body hammer). If you use a spacer make sure you have a tight seal between carb & air cleaner.
