Try AFR 195's. That's what I'm going with on my 383 build come the first of the year

Re: Edelbrock 6073 heads how good are they?

If you use Edelbrock's Performer RPM heads you can expect to make 0.9 to 1.3 horsepower per cube depending upon choice of cam and compression ratio. So doing the math a 383 times 0.9 yields a low ball figure of 345 horsepower. On the high side they expect you to be limited to 498 horsepower. This information is published on Edelbrock's Tech Question page:

Re: Edelbrock 6073 heads how good are they?

Those 6073 are the old ones though. The new ones 60739 have been reworked. Can't see the link at work so don't know if it mentions that. Think they're 170cc which is fine for a lower RPM street pounder and low end torque but will probably be out of steam by 5500, just depends on what goals the OP has for the engine. Not really enough info given by the OP to say "how good they are" for a 383.....45 year old 441 lo-po's are good for a 383 if you just want to drive it to the store and back, know what I mean? Have seen the old RPM's for sale used for just a few hundred bucks so figure that might be why he's asking.

That was my 'suggestion' based on the little information you posted with respct to a 383. Give a little more information about what you are looking to get out of your setup, and more refined answers will come back to you. If you want low and midrange torque, then this might be the ticket. If you plan to rev higher than 5500, then you might want to go with something with larger ports. The setup also matters. You didn't mention what cam, intake or exhaust setup.

Re: Edelbrock 6073 heads how good are they?

LOL.

The Edelbrock Heads are a very nice quality piece for a street/mild strip build, there are much better heads out there for the $, but you cant go wrong with them. With out of the box parts I believe the most power I attempted with them was about 470HP, not saying it wouldn't have made more with different parts, but I wasn't going for max effort.

Depending on what your goals are....as long as its not more than 500ish you will be fine.

Re: Edelbrock 6073 heads how good are they?

They are better than most, not as good as the best.
Quality wise they are good.
Since they have 0.100" longer valves you will need custom longer length pushrods.
