You can driil and tap the crank, or use a block of wood and a hammer?

The latter of these 2 options worked for me about 4 years ago and it's still hanging in there and I drive the car a lot.

Do yourself a favor and drill and tap it. I use an angle head drill if it's in the car. It's easy.

The hole is already started.

It doesn't have to be dead nuts straight.

I agree totally.

Use a cobalt bit and take your time tapping the hole.

The last thing you need is to break the tap off in the hole.

Re: 69 327 harmonic balancer installation without a center bolt

I started taking the engine apart tonight to remove the timing chain and it turns out that my crank is already taped out with a 7/16 national fine threads. Will a harmonic balancer install tool work with a 7/16 NF bolt? Also it looks like the oil pan needs to be lowered to get the cover off?

You can make an install tool with 7/16-20 all thread(grade 8 if you can find it), a couple of big washers and a lugnut.

Yes - the pan needs to be lowered

Really, a hammer? Remind me not to have you work on my car. Don't hammer it on.

Thanks, I was able to barrow a installer at the local AutoZone. The timing gear cover had RTV on it , not sure if that is factory or not.

Miilions of early SBCs did not have threads in the crank's snout. Driving the balancer on with a hammer and a block of wood is just fine. Don't apply hammer blows to the outer edge of the balancer beyond the rubber ring - aim for the center.

Drill, tap and use an install tool if you can.

There was a 6 degree difference from the old timing chain to the new timing chain.
