396 Balancer

Does this look like the correct balancer for a 396? Should it have the counter weights?

Thumbs up Re: 396 Balancer

The 396 & 427 are 'Internal' balanced engines.
The 454 and larger engines are 'External' balanced from GM, and have counterweights on external components to aid in achieving a balanced rotating assembly.

No. I'm sure there are some numbers on it to find out what it comes from.

Re: 396 Balancer

I removed this from a 396. Numbers are GM2 8880 080. I could not find any info for these numbers.

Wink Re: 396 Balancer

If I wasn't clear enough with the answer ... Yes ( ) it IS from a 396 or 427.
I would bet the number is actually 3860060 (hard to read some of them) ... a common unit from a late 60's/early 70's lower HP hydraulic cammed 396/402 or 427.

Re: 396 Balancer

Because I absolutely hate giving bad info and I want to make sure I'm giving you the right info, I just went out to the garage and pulled my harmonic balancer off my 396. I gave it a light media blast so you can see it clearly. It's my Camaro's born with engine and it's the original balancer.
The counter weights on yours threw me off. If it is 3860060 like John mentioned above, it would be a 396 balancer.

Front of balancer as I pulled it off my motor tonight.

Re: 396 Balancer

They do look the same. I stumped as to why mine has weights.

When you mention weights, are you referring to the four slugs in the drilled holes on the hub? If so, those should be normal weights added to bring the hub into neutral balance. If it was a damper for an external balance engine, it would have a cut out on part of the outer ring.

Just for another example of the added slugs, the damper hub on my Z28 has two slugs in the outer holes.

What kind of cut out? Mine was drilled on the outer ring and I've seen a lot of 454 balancers that are drilled similarly, but have more drilled spots. Is his an earlier balancer and that's why it has the slugs? I noticed his is a GM2 and mine is GM3. I figured that was different versions.

Was thinking about a 400 sbc external balance.....the bbc external balance had additional cast weight added inside the hub.
