Ignition upgrade?

I have a 68 with a 327. The previous owner did all the work on the car and

must have McGivered some stuff. I went to my local Advance Auto

looking for a new distributor cap and rotor and they didn't fit.

I have dual points. The engine runs fine for awhile then suddenly runs like $hit.

It's not the fuel. I have added stuff all along like Sta-bil marine or Seafoam

since the car isn't used every day. I would like to upgrade to electronic ignition.

I've seen units out there that look like distributors which is nice because it's

keeps the old look.

Does anybody have any specific types or links that I should look into?

An MSD small body would be a good choice. The 8360 Ready to Run.

Re: Ignition upgrade?

A pertronix is quite a bit cheaper and also includes a rev limiter. You can get one $40 cheaper still without the rev limiter :

Re: Ignition upgrade?

I used the Pertronix Ignitor III module in a stock distributor and could not be happier, much better performance than the MSD billet distributor and 6AL box that was in the car. The adjustable rev limiter and triple spark from idle all the way to 10k rpm's are worth the extra $'s in my opinion.

I believe a picture of the present dist would be a good start.

Reads like a Mallory YL dist or an older Corvette Fuel Injection V8 -890 distributor.

Re: Ignition upgrade?

IMHO a DUI (Davis Unified Ignition) can't be beat. It is an HEI style distributor and is calibrated to your specific set-up. No extra wires, no extra boxes like MSD. Clean, reliable set-up. Extremely happy with mine.

I had one of these as well. Sold it when I switched to an LS engine and got almost as much as I originally paid for it.

I also have the DUI distributor. It is an awesome distributor. I recommended the MSD for more of a stock look and for ease of installation. I had to massage (dent) my firewall to fit the large body HEI. Some people don't have to for various reasons. (engine and transmission mounts etc.)

http://performancedistributors.com/ or you can get from Summit etc.

Re: Ignition upgrade?

I put an Accel unit in with their own brand super coil.

Because the wires are the Mopar style, I opted to stay with them and use the Mopar style distributor cap too.

What a difference...!

Night and day from the dual points....!

Best money I've spent on the car yet....!
