What carb... 572 ci 600+hp

I need to pick up a new carb. What do you guys think is good these days for a 572 w/ ~600 hp. I'm not looking to break the bank, but I'd like something good. Will a Holley 850 allow enough cfms or should I look in another direction? School me please... Never had a motor this big.

I think that is a great choice Dave. I have a Holley (0-82750 ) as well with no choke and love it. I'm sure you will get more opinions on this as everyone seems to have their own thoughts on carb selection. I'm very happy with mine.

What is the max rpm you will turn the engine? Is this a 4.375" Stroke 572 or a 4.500" Stroke build?

Re: What carb... 572 ci 600+hp

Dave it has been my experience that a healthy big block responds to a Dominator better than the same cfm rated 4150 series. So if you where to install a 4150 series 750 cfm carb (list number 0-4779C) on top of a single plane manifold and dyno the motor and then swap the manifold to accept a larger 4500 series Dominator 750 cfm list number 0-80186-1 (made for dual carb on top of a tunnel ram in Sportsman class racing) you would notice an increase in the torque and the horsepower curve from 3600 RPM and above. The larger throats and taller 4500 single plane intake manifolds just breath better. If you are thinking about using a 950 cfm 4150 then a 1050 4500 would make the motor respond better to the carb change.

They also make a poor excuse of a dropped base 4500 air cleaner (quality is no where near the quality of the Corvette, and Z/28 dropped base air cleaner) if you have hood clearance concerns with your tall deck big block.

Definitely a good question and one I should know, but this motor was built a few years ago and changed hands at least twice, so without disassembling it I'm not positive right now.

Thanks for the info Dave. I'll definitely consider the Dominator. I was getting ready to pull the trigger on the 4150 850 cfm noted above. I'd love to keep it around $600. I wouldn't even mind finding a nicer model used carb if it's nice, but I'd like to do it soon. I was thinking about the 1050, but it doesn't seem like their manners were as good on the street. I had one on a built LS6 454 (~700 hp or so) back in the 90s, but ended up swapping it out.
It's too bad about the dropped base not being much good. It's needed... It's a 68 RS/SS 396 (obviously NOM) with a cowl hood. Wanted to put an SS hood on it, but can't the way it is now. The whole story is that this is a car a good buddy of mine picked up recently. I'm trading him the carb for his 71 Chevelle 396/402 motor. It's a good running motor with all the accessories still attached and a nice intake. It literally just needs a carb. I posted about it a week or so ago. I want to set my buddy up right, but not too right...

Re: What carb... 572 ci 600+hp

A 402 is going to want about 750 to 800 cfm. I put a vacuum secondary 750 cfm HP series carb on my 406 and it was a perfect match for my set up (heads, cam, and gearing).

Here is an older Holley carb put on a BBC Chevy offered used on flea-Bay:

I thought we were looking for a carb to put on top of a 572 BBC.

You thought right. No worries. He has a 71 396/402 that I want and he needs a carb for his new 572. We're doing a little horse trading. I'm going to buy him a carb and he's giving me the 396/402.

Yep. That's the short version... He doesn't do credit cards and on-line etc. I'm going to put my born with 396 in the corner until I can do that motor right. This is just a good way to get my 69 on the road in this century and help my buddy out at the same time.

I have a Holley 80531 850 VS, electric choke that I took as trade. I have run this on my 383 with extremely good results, I jetted it down to my needs with a LM1. Only problem is that is does not give me the crisp throttle response as my 3310-4 750 but off idle wot motor screams .

If you are interested, pm me. I have no use and will let it go easily. I think I mentioned this before on this site but got very little interests.

I appreciate the offer Don, but he wants to go with a carb w/o a choke horn on it.
