LQ9 questions

Hey guys,
I have to admit I am old school. Having said that, I was looking at LQ9 engines for an LS swap down the road. What intake you guys install on these engines?? I think they all have TB ?? Also what about the pulleys etc ?? If I change the cam, where can I send out the ECM to be calibrated for the new cam etc ?? Thanks.

Re: LQ9 questions

The LQ9 is a good motor. 6.0l with higher compression than the LQ4. If you keep the cathedral port heads, you can run an LS6 intake (better) or LS1 or LS2 intake. Or you could do an aftermarket like a Fast intake. If you change heads, you could do an LS3 intake. Yes, they all have a TB.

I'm running a Vic Jr. intake with a 4 barrel TB to keep an old school look.

I went with a whole new wiring harness from PSI conversions, they will flash their ECU as well.

Re: LQ9 questions

LQ9 10:1 comp but otherwise same as the LQ4 (9.4:1 due to dished pistons)
I got a LQ4 for a song that needed a rebuild. It had no wiring and was complete intake to pan. Beings I didn't have the electronics and can tune a carb... I went with a carbed intake and used a MSD box to drive it.
I swapped to LS3 heads that I had the shop shave to get the comp up (10.5:1ish), added a cam on a 110 LSA due to the carb, and it performs

Not knocking EFI, but if you don't have the parts...it can get expensive.

With that said, there are a few guys that can fix the wiring by removing the VATS and such.
As for where to send the brain (ECM), I'm at a loss, but there are people that can do that too

Re: LQ9 questions

To avoid needing support for re-flashing I went with Megasquirt for the LS3 I'm putting in a '69 Vette.

Re: LQ9 questions

I ordered mine last week. I'll be working with a generic harness but they said that they are working on a plug/play LS harness.

Re: LQ9 questions

There's a new player out there also....Dayton Sensors. I hear good things about them, but no personal experience.
Also, not sure if its carb swap or EFI only

Re: LQ9 questions

You can simply run an LS2 intake, fuel rails, and injectors. (Can buy for about $300 - $400) which is way less then a new 4 barrel intake and carb.

Even when you buy the harness and ECM for EFI you'll still be less.

For Carb you need spark control and tranny controller if going auto.

The ECM does engine and tranny control

PSI is a good way to go for the harness and ECM.

With a cam swap you best to have it dynotuned when you get it all together.
