Hello, the four dealers I talked to around here dont have a clue about this subject so I'm hoping someone here can help me.I have an 86 Chevy 1 ton dump truck and I want to buy a new GM motor for it.My VIN # designates I have a M motor instead of the L.The dealers cant tell me the difference only that mine is $700 more. They both are 4 bolt, same crank, carburated. One dealer said the heads are different.Should I pop for the $2K motor or go with the cheapie? Thanks.PS,I know this is not performance related but dont know where else to go.

Scoot,
I think there are a few differences in the two. Most of the heavy duty motors have a steel crank. They also have the stellite exhaust valves with larger stems. I cannot think of any other differences, but I also know that if you do not replace the motor with the correct one by the serial number, there will be no warranty. Dont let them tell you otherwise.
I think I would go with the correct motor in that type of truck.

Maybe the "M" is for more and the "L" is for less?
