I have a 66 Chevy 2 with a 8.20 rear end in it with 3.36 gears and i want to put some 3.08 gears with posi unit out of a 68 camaro.I need to know where to start as for as setting this up.should i start with original pinion shim and what should the backlash be set at being used gears? I will also be using a master kit from jeg's with all new bearings.

EEEK! Setting up a ring and pinion, particulary setting the pinion depth for correct tooth pattern, is a combination of science, art, and black magic.

Suggestion: Put the 3:36 ring gear from the chevy 2 on the camaro posi unit, leave the pinion alone. The you'll just have to set the backlash, much easier than setting pinion depth for the correct tooth pattern. Check the backlash with a dial indicator before you take the chevy 2 apart...and just set it the same with the new posi carrier.

Measure the backlash of the 3.08 gears in the old rear first, if the lash is too loose, I'd get new gears instead. They don't last forever...

Post your question in the transmission section, hopefully Big Gear Head will see it and give you a good answer.
