Engine stalling and won't idle.

Hi there,

Thought I would post here and see what advice I can get.

I have a stock 396 325hp engine, 4 barrel Quadrajet , stock distributor (points), 4spd 68 camaro.

Ok, cruising down the highway a felt a slight stall or miss. An hour or so later doing about 50mph it was more a complete stall like someone had put the brakes on. I managed to get home. Now it won't idle unless I give it lots of throttle around 1200rpm-1500rpm. Once I back off the throttle it stalls. Checked leads, resistance is good. Can see squirts of fuel once car is turned off and looking down the carb if I activate the throttle linkage.

My next step was to start from scratch.

Has anyone experienced something similar to the above?

Thank you.

Pull the bowl off the carb and clean it out. It sounds like my may have some debris in one of you jets.

Re: Engine stalling and won't idle.

Hi,

I will check the points. In the next couple of days.

I have 2 nice streams of fuel once I operate the throttle.

Thank you.

Re: Engine stalling and won't idle.

You can pull the carb air horn off without removing carb from engine.
I would also check for a split vacuum hose, or misplaced, or slipped off.

Check the plug wires. Might be as simple as a loose wire.

Re: Engine stalling and won't idle.

This seems to be a reoccurring theme this season!

In my case (Qjet, points), the original coil was going bad, replaced coil with Pertronix #40011.

Then one day the float was glued to the bottom of the bowl, had to take apart to get it unstuck. Then some evaporated ethanol film was stuck in one jet preventing the primary rod from closing the jet off at high vacuum. Both those condition caused an over rich condition. Between the air cleaner stud and the choke, there is a vent hole, you can stick a small rod (screwdriver) down that hole and feel the top of the float. If you have a high gas level the screwdriver will cause the fuel to slosh out (and engine will die). If the float level is correct, you can feel the slight resistance when you push slightly down on the top of the float and gas will come out in the throttle plates.

I also think I have a slight leak in the lower fuel wells, which could cause the bowl to empty out too fast and cause some puddling of fuel in the intake after shutdown (hard starting I assume). I still need to check that.

All because of the "modern" gasoline

Kevin

I was also going to suggest you test the coil.

Re: Engine stalling and won't idle.

HGow long since the car has had a full service.
Visual Check points... not if any change of initial timing since the last service.. dwell / wear changes timing.
Replaced spark plugs.. and check the old ones.. my last set ngks lasted 5 yrs.. 30/40 k miles
Checked and cleaned rotor, checked counterweight bushes still in good condition...check play in the main dizzy shaft, check VA holds a vaccuum and the advance mechanism is working check vent curve.. take rpms up till timing no longer moves... check against original set up... and the intermediate and primary rpm points.. re lube the points
Check HT lead resistance, and if any insulation leaking in the dark.
Check float levels...air filters, fuel filters
Clean PVC valve

Then also the usual oil filter/ oil change.. grease ball joints , drive shaft universal joints, tie rod , pitman are steering joints, check power steering oil.
Drain and back flush the cooling system.. check anti freeze levels and electrolyte content.
Check battery loading and alternator out put, visually check pullies and tensions.
Top up and check windscreen washer bottle and check working....

Maintenance...good maintenance is something so often over looked but is the answer to yrs of trouble free operation of any machinery.

My Spelling is not incorrect...it is creative

Re: Engine stalling and won't idle.

Exact same thing happened to me, and KevinW is right, its a recurring theme this season. I did a complete tune up, adjusted carb who knows how many times, checked vacuum, checked cylinder compression, etc.-->>and nothing. Wound up being the adaptor my carburetor sits on. Don't know if you have one on your intake manifold, but if you do, that was my problem. Yes, I'd definitely check for vacuum leak, especially if this happened all of a sudden.

Hi,

Awesome. Some great suggestions.

I'm pretty thorough with my maintenance.

Will have a good play this weekend and report back. Miss cruising around in my camaro.

Cheers.
