Question

Ok guys, this one is starting to get to me...has anyone found a HEI (probably small body) that will fit in their 1st Gen Camaro without any firewall hammering? If not, I"m considering Pertronix, but I've heard good and not so good things about them. Help!

Well if you hammer very good no one will ever tell the big cap hides all did this crude thing on my old 69 or go aftermarket.

i installed an HEI with out a problem... but is very close ( 3/16" ) to firewall.

I installed an MSD RtR billet distributor which is a small body dist. It has the spark amplification circuits in the base and uses a std. coil.

Works excellent!

I installed a GM HEI on my 68 396 & it fits close but I required no hammering. The fit seems to change from car to car though. You can always go down to the local parts store buy a stock replacement and try it. If it fits then you know, if it doesn't just take it back. If it doesn't though I would personally look for a smaller body before I brought the hammer out!!!!!!

Installed the Pertronix today. Piece of cake. The only problem was the magnetic ring was warped and the pickup distance was a little hard to determine.
Seems to work fine.

Get a hold of Ignitionman. He will convert your stock points distributer to to an HEI. This is what I did and it works great and looks/fits like stock. IMO this is the only way to go.
