I don't know anything about the big block setup. But on the small block setup with the short pump, the alternator belt just barely sqeezes past the input shaft casting of the PS pump. There probably isn't more than 3/8" clearance. The alternator belt runs between the pully and the PS pump body.
Weekends are pretty slow around here, but hopefully someone will tell us if the 396 and SBC setups were similar or not.
