if the rod has a bronze tip, it goes to the cam, otherwise it don't matter

Im gonna say that the nice shiny smooth part goes in the engine first.

I have rods that have a shiny spot on each end. measure the rod, you will see no difference on a new rod
here is a picture of a new rod. which end goes next to the cam

If it is new and both ends look the same then it does not matter. Now if it used is another story. I put a used one in reversed and it had wear and would tick like a solid lifter, it would not come out and I had to go to an electric pump until I pulled the motor. Buy new and never look back

Do you have pics of the wear pattern on each end, that might tell more.

I meant shiny on the outside of the rod, not on the flat end. Im guessing that the scratched up part was sticking out of the engine and not inside.
