Question

hey people
I just purchased a 1971 camaro, no engine, with the intention of partially restoring it (original body panels, original dash, etc.) partially customizing it (wheels, suspension upgrade.) my question is this, what would be the better choice for an engine and trans setup, should I go original setup (350, 396, 402) or should I get a newer (i.e LS1, etc.) engine? I am a new comer to the camaro deal, I want I daily driver, but with enough power to keep up with sub 12s supers we have here on the street.
thanks for the info

First off - WELCOME to Team Camaro

I think it depends on your budget, the original drivetrain (if still there) and your mechanical abilities.
If the car was a small block originally it may be eisier to reinstall a 350,383 - 400 small block drivetrain. Big Block Second generation Camaro's are fairly rare so finding parts to install a Big Block driveline may be harder outside of the U.S. - most parts would have to be ordered.
Try a search on this and other forums for 'LS1 Install' - I know this topic has been discussed for First Gen cars many times and much of the info would apply to you car. There may even be some past posts specific to 2nd Gens!
2nd Gens are really coming into their own around here lately so you are in good company!
Good luck with your build and feel free to post back with questions.

Welcome! To do an LS1 conversion, you will probably spend about $4000-5000 for the engine AND tranny, make sure you get the original ECM computer with the engine (this will be a used unit, see them quite a bit at swaps now). Look up some info on years vs. intakes on certain models... some are better than others. THEN, you will still have quite a bit of work ahead of you... I only say this, because in MY estimation, it would be better to stick with a sb that was originally in it... just my opinion.
