I am having an overheating problem with my 67 Camaro. The engine is a stock 350 out of a 95 Tahoe. with Vortec heads & a vortec Quadra jet intake. the radiator is new & for a big block 396. the water pump is also new but is for a 67 Camaro. there is no thermostat installed. after the engine runs for about 10-15 minutes it overheats. The upper hose gets hot but the lower hose stays cool. The heater core is currently bypassed & that hose gets hot. I have disconnected the upper hose & run the engine & have good flow.
My thought is that either the pump has to be changed to a "95" pump to match the motor. Or I've used the wrong head gaskets. The gaskets were part of a complete set for a 67 Camaro which I ordered through Jegs.

Just my opinion but the first thing I would do is put a 180 thermostat in it and try again. I have no idea what the flow rates are on the different water pumps but you need a thermostat no matter which pump you use.

Hi Thanks for the replies
We checked it out & it's not a reverse flow engine. the pulley system is from the 67 Camaro. I"ve just gotten it together so I hadn't run it very much as of the first posting here What I found out is that the car only overheats when it's sitting still with the engine running. If I keep the car moving she runs like a top & stays cool. If the flow is blocked it's only partially so since while the revs & MPH are up the engine stays cool.
I had a 180 thermostat in when I first put the engine in & cooked it with the first test runs.
I also looked into putting the 95 pump in & it's a no go without changing the to a serpentine belt so I have to see if there's a higher volume 67 pump but again there's the cool lower hose. which may mean a blocked port.
What do you think
