Hello all,

I was just wondering... If build my 327 with flat top 4 vr pistons and Vortec heads and about 32-34 deg. of total ignition timing, as I planned, will it be able to tolerate the mid-grade gas or will I have to run 91 octane or up.

If the engine can't tolerate the mid grade gas, no big deal. I will certainly run the 91 octane stuff... any thoughts?

I'm running a true 9.6:1 and run 89 octane with 32* total timing. This will also vary with the load place on the engine...a car will 4.11:1 gears will ping less than a car with 3.08's.

355 cid 9.6:1 on 87 octane, 432hp @ 5850rpm w/ 34* total.

I run my 10.65:1, aluminum headed, L82 cam, 383 on 87, 89 or 91. It doesn't ping on 87, even in summer.

My LM1 after being rebuilt pinged a whole lot more than my 383 and that has pretty low compression(8.5:1) but I'm running that XE262 cam. I can't remember how far the pistons were in the hole, but it was a ways so my quench is way over .040.

The quench on the 383 is pretty tight, like .032-.035. The guy who built my engine said that the tight quench, L82 cam and aluminum heads would allow me to run 87. I didn't believe him, so I ran 91 but eventually I tried 87 and it works fine.
