Question

I'm just wondering because my 68 has an open 8.2 rear-end with the little 2.73's and I bought a 78 RS camaro that has an 8.5 rear-end. I have two questions:
1)Will the 8.5 swap right in with-out any axle shortening or anything like that?
2)What is the gear ratio on the 78 camaro's rear-end?
Thanks,
Donnie

Oh, I have mono-leaf springs. I don't know if that makes a difference.

I don't think it is a simple bolt in. The '78 is a little wider, but I don't think the mounts are the same. The '78 probably has 2.73s in it too. I don't think you would gain much.

Question

Okay, thanks big gear head but aren't the 8.5's quite a bit stronger than the 8.2?

Yes they are. I just meant you wouldn't gain anything in the gear ratio. If you want to spend the money on gears and a posi then the 8.5 would be the one to build, but I don't think this one will fit your car.

I think that 71-74 nova 8.5's are a direct bolt in. You can use the posi carrier out of any 8.5. You might want to do a search to make sure that my year models are correct, but I think that I am right.

Back me up, guys

On the Nova the years that will work goes up to the 76 model. Crap, I measured the rear end of my 79 Z28 a couple of days ago but I forgot what the measurement was. Your 78 rear end is to wide though, it will need to be narrowed to work.
