Felpro 1pc oilpan gasket does not work on 396

I had a learning experience using Felpro's 1pc gasket. It does not work on my 68 Camaro 396. When I first built the 396 I put in Felpro 1pc gasket, well it leaked around the timing chain cover and also around the main seal area. I figured I must have installed it wrong so I bought another one and installed it. Well It leaked too in the same area. I did a little research and I found many people were complaining about oil leaks around these areas in 396 big block engines. I pulled the pan again and this time I took pictures of the gasket. Felpro gasket does not fit the Mark V 396. I then found out Mr Gasket #6663G 1pc gasket fit it perfectly. The pictures below is proof. The Blue gasket is Felpro (first and second pics) and the Greyish (third and forth pics) is Mr Gasket. I now do not have a oil leak since I in stalled Mr Gasket#6663G... I hope to help others avoid oil leaks installing Felpro's 1pc gasket ( DO NOT BUY THIS GASKET FOR THE 396 big block)

Does the 1 piece Fel-Pro oil pan gasket fit any big block Chevy engines? I have always used the cork oil pan gaskets with a high success rate. I don't like to try different gaskets that I don't know anything about. Now I have heard the Fel Pro 1 piece oil pan gasket for the SBC works good.

That is true....I was pretty dumb the first time around... The second time I did not put the pan completely I just dropped it enough to pull the old gasket and put the new one in. The third time around I removed the headers and turned the crank to position the timing mark at 5:00. I then was able to drop the pan completely and check the fit.

I also noticed on the label of Mr Gasket it say's "Fits Gen IV Engines 1965-90" I incorrectly identified my engine as Gen V in the original posting...It is Gen IV.

I am not sure. Someone would have to check the 427 of maybe the 454. For sure Felpro will not fit the 396.
I also heard on Small blocks "Felpro" gaskets do not have a problem.

Oh Boy!!! Just purchased this gasket last week and threw out the box!!! I thought the first one I had was my rear main seal. Well after 3 or 4 rear main seals leaking, and 3 or 4 1 piece oil pan gaskets (can't remember how many times) I purchased the Fel-Pro oil pan gasket again part# 1884R. The last oil pan gasket from Summit (their own brand) leaked at the front. What part# is that ??? There are two different #"s, 1884 and OS.... something or other.

Re: Felpro 1pc oilpan gasket does not work on 396

I've used the 1884R on 2 different 396 rebuilds without any leaks. I use the snot 3M glue weatherstripping adhesive #80010 at the corners and the lips of the curved seals at the timing cover and the rear. I've got a fresh 427 build in the car now with the same gasket yet to be fired up, here's hoping!

Good to know Gordon, The other part# I think is 5/16" thick. That could be the issue.

Thinking back felpro was the only gasket I could find locally. This does not excuse me from applying common sense in which I fault myself. When I first built the engine, I dry fitted the felpro gasket, I figured it would compress and seal. All I could say is my fault. The reason for this posting is to warn others and avoid making the same mistake.

Re: Felpro 1pc oilpan gasket does not work on 396

Not to add confusion... I have a FelPro 1 piece on my 68 396 now. It has been on there for 2 years with no issues. I do remember it being thick. I may of even used longer studs to accommodate. I'll dig up the part number that's on there.

Buckets and piles of a 1968 SS Conv 396
-piles are getting smaller, and it started !
- got the paint on, interior is next.
- interior is about done, it's cruise'able !
- down to top, windows and a few little pieces and it's done

The part number of the Felpro Gasket I got is "OS30061T". It has a 1 year warranty so if yours is the same gasket as mine you should not have any problems taking it back. I thought my oil leak was from the main seal as well. I inspected it closely and found the leak was coming from the oil pan gasket.

That is what is confusing. Some people have no problems and others like me do. You can see by the pics the gasket does not fit well. The Diameter at the timing cover and the back around the main seal is not correct for my engine. I glad you did not a any leaks. It is not fun lifting the engine and removing the pan to fix an oil leak.
