I have a 67 Camaro with a 12 bolt posi that has a 2.7? gear ratio. I want to put in a 3.73 ring and pinion. Does anyone make a 3.73 ring and pinion for series 2 posi carriers? Is there any way of accomplishing this gear swap without replacing the carrier?

I am not sure if you can use the same carrier but the pinion and ring gear are a set and must be replaced as a set.

I know Mr. Gasket makes a spacer to put a 4 series gear on a 3 series carrier. It may work to put a 3 series gear on a 2 series carrier, not sure though. Try them at www.mrgasket.com

do not use a spacer!! they are a bomb waiting to happen!! there are thiker gear's out there for this but the best way is to get the proper carrer! plain and simple no good way around it.

not meaning to call name's but only a fool uses a spacer, there is alot of torque going through the ring gear, and a spacer make's it weaker! any shop that put's one in is also just beging to be sued for damges to a car and people in it. do a search on this or e-mail big gearhead, he is a pro at diff's listen to him he know's his stuff!

Thank you very much ilbl8. You are right about the spacer. They should only be used if there is NO other alternative. The thicker gear is a good way to go if there is one available. I don't know right off if there is a thick 3.73 for the 12 bolt car rear end. I know there is one for the 12 bolt truck, but that is a different rear end. I'll check it out and try to have an answer for you tomorrow.

Guys, I know the spacer isn't as strong as a proper gear, but on a smallblock street driven Camaro 12 bolt, I don't see the problem.

I wouldn't want to put one behind a big block stick, for drag racing. But I've seen a lot of them on street driven Camaros of around 400 to 420 hp, and heard of no problems.
I just pulled apart a set of 4.88's from a 12 bolt that I bought they were drag raced with a spacer.
Isn't there ANY time a spacer would be OK?

As far as I can tell there is no thick 3.73 gear set for the 12 bolt car rear end. You could look at the swap meets and find a 3 series case that someone broke the gears in and maybe pick it up cheap. All the parts in your 2 series will work in the 3 series case. Maybe chacane67 could sell your 2 series to one of his land speed friends and you could buy a complete 3 series.

The problem with the spacer is that it moves the ring gear away from the flange. The posi case is machined to center the ring gear and the machined area is right next to the flange. The spacer moves the gear too far and the machined area can no longer center the gear. It may set up ok but when you put a lot of torque through it the gear will move. This causes wear problems and can break off the ring gear bolts. The more solid you can mount the gear, the better it is.

big gear head,
I would like to get a series 3 posi carrier and a gear set of about 3:23 or something close to that for my Chevelle. I have a 12 bolt rear that is an open right now, but would like to fix that before I bolt it into my car. Also, I have never messed with setting up a rear end, is this something you can walk someone through, or just better left to the pros. I don't have a great selection of diff shops in this area and the two that are here want about $1,200 to do the whole job. You can email me directly if you want about the prices, or post them.

Thanks,
Bill C.
