Question

I blew a head gasket last week. It let go between the center two cylinders on the pass side. There is no coolent in the oil or oil in radiator. After I took the head off, I cleaned the carbon off the pistons using carb cleaner. Did some of the carb cleaner make its way to the oil pan? I just changed to Mobile 1 about a week before the head gasket went. Should I change oil before firing it up again? how 'bout the filter? Thanks for the help

I quess to some extent it depends on 'how much' Carb Cleaner got down by the rings into the oil.
I clean piston tops often with Carb Cleaner on a rag. With the piston at TDC I scrape any excess, blow it off and then do a final cleaning with some cleaner on a rag. There is not much chance that an excessive amount will find it's way into the pan and it should evaporate away quickly.
I would not worry about the oil being contaminated if you did not 'soak' the piston tops with cleaner.
I would definately change the filter before starting the motor. Then consider changing the oil/filter again before the next recommended change interval to be sure that any bits of cantamination are removed.

Hope this helps - post back with questions.

Thanks Vintage - I didn't over soak the pistons with carb cleaner but I did use enough that I guess I'll change the oil and filter anyway. A little more money couldn't hurt right? Better safe than sorry. Thanks for the suggestion.
