Can anyone explain the difference between the two?

Or better yet, does anyone have a breakdown on the numbering system for AC Delco plugs?

i think the 45s is an old style gasketed plug with the 13/16 or whatever head, and the TS has a tapered seat with a 5/8 hex head.

the R45TS is probably the most common plug they make. pretty much every small block from the 70's and 80's used this plug.

Thanks guys. Can the 45S and 45TS be used interchangeably on 291 casting heads?

The 45S and 45TS are not interchangeable. The 45TS is for tapered seats and the 45S is for non tapered gasketed seats. It has been posted that the tapered seats will seat up to non tapered heads, but it's not a good idea. The 291 heads were not tapered and should use the 45S plug.
