I've run into a small promblem with my 67 with a 396 engine in it, I'm using a old style Eldebrock C 396 intake & a Eldebrock 750 cfm carb. I'm also using the correct frame mounts for a Big Block. My Hood is a SS Style hood. My air filter is a Stock Chevy open drop base 14" with a 3" Fram Filter. The promblem is my airfilter top is rubbing the hood pad. The ? is will a 2 & 1/2" K&N air filter flow enought air with the combo I've got for my engine to run right on?

i have the exact same setup and the same problem. currently i am using the cheap eldelbrock triangle looking filter, but i am wanting to get an air cleaner in the cowl and seal it off from the engine bay. i think my only option is to go with a 11" size and custom fab a hood seal.

How much does the air cleaner base drop? If it's not too much (like 0.5" or 0.75"), you could purchase a K&N filter base, which has a 1.5 or 1.25" drop. This would allow you to use the 3" filter. With this base, I can run a 4" filter with my Team G intake on a plain-jane hood.

A little info relative to your problems with the clearance. Currently have the 396 with the c396 intake and an AED 750 carb with a 1" spacer.Used an Edelbrock drop base 14" with a 3" filter. Hood was a 2" cowl.Had problems with the retaining nut on the air cleaner hitting the hood. Have changed the hood to a "Stinger" type and use a K&N 14" drop base with a 3" element. Everything clears now.Tried the smaller size(10" or 11")but didn't like the way it looked. Not sure what steps you should take or could take to help the problem.Let me know if you need further info on my sit-up.
