Well, I pulled the 302 out of my Z mainly for cleaning and to confirm all the parts are correct. So far so good. Now that I have it on an engine stand I guess I need to confirm everything is in good working order. Should I do a compression check? Did not do it while it was in the car. Leak down test? Have the heads freshened up? How far should I take it?

If your going to put a different motor in, then rebuild it and set it aside in your garage. If it's going back in, rebuild it, while its in the machine shop clean up the engine bay.

If I'm remembering from your other posts, you're just doing an underhood clean & detail?

If yuo've had no problems with the motor, and it doesn't need a rebuild, there isn't a lot to do.

Clean & paint of course.

Replace any leaky gaskets.

Check the clutch, replace the throwout bearing even if everything else is still good.

Great time to adjust the valves.

I have decided to freshen the motor up while I have it out. It doesn't appear to need much.
thanks!
