I just got my corvette 327 put in my 69 and I am having a lot of trouble finding an alterrnator bracket. I know this may be meaningless to most of you but I have had the motor running for over a week now and would like to get it out see what it is made of. I need someone to show me the bracket I am missing. First the vette motor is circa 1968, and second I would like it on the passenger side of my car. I have an upper bracket for adjustment that bolts to intake and to the water pump. I also have a bracket that bolts twice to the pump and once to the front lower bolt on alt. I need, I believe a bracket that fastens to the rear of the lower alt. bolt. The 68 motor does not have holes in the head, and the only header mount bracket I can find seems to only fit drivers side mount. I am open to any and all suggestions, ie I have the wrong brackets now or Hey "Dumb..." all you need is ???.. Really want to drive my car!! TIA

I think the problem is that you are mixing a short water pump engine ('68 and older) with a long water pump setup ('69 and newer). Only the '69 and newer have the holes in the front of the heads for the long water pump bracket setup.

A '68 would have the alt on the drivers side with completely different bracketry.

a67 thanks for the reply. I have knowledge on the differences, but when I measure my water pump on the vette motor I get 7 inches just like the water pump on the 1984 305 that I got the pulleys and brackets from. Is there something I am missing here. I thought that 7 inches was a long pump. In any event all the belts line up so I assume that these should work. I was just hoping that someone could give me advice on how to properly mount the alt. on the passsenger side.

Hello,
The bracket that you are refering to is actually just a spacer that goes between the lower alt. bolt hole and the cyl. head. That's where you are having the problem, your 68 cyl heads have no bolt hole for the lower alt. bolt to go into. You may be able to get away with just running a bolt through the bracket that bolts to the water pump and into the lower alt. hole with a nut on the back of the alt. to tighten the whole thing up. I don't know how stable that setup will be but you could try it. The other alternative would be to try and drill and tap a hole into the cyl. head, but I wouldn't recomend it, too easy to drill into water jacket and difficult to locate hole in the correct position. Have you considered looking into an aftermarket mounting bracket setup? I would try the lower bolt and nut thing first and see how it looks. JMO and hope that helps.

Blue thanks for throwing out some ideas, I have actually thought about the long bolt idea. I can actually get the alt really tight with just the upper and lower front bolted. Maybe a bolt all way thru would keep it from torquing sp? off

If the bolt through the lower mount does't seem stable enough you could try to drill and tap the head. After giving it a little more thought, I remembered that alt. bolt goes into an upper hole in the head and there should be no danger of hitting water. The only problems would getting the hole properly located and if you are willing to drill a hole into a head from a vette, may lessen the value someday.
I see you are from Waseca, I grew up in SW Minnesota, and went to college in Mankato, about 20 years ago.

For a long term solution you may want to consider one of these brackets http://www.alangrovecomponents.com/S.B.Short_Pump.htm

Hey Blue

small world, I am actually an Iowa boy, been here about 6 years. Other than the weather, it's been a good ride so far!

Jacket I checked out alan groove, but I have a long water pump on the 68. Previous owner must have changed it. I don't see a bracket that will work
