I have a chance to get a 383 crank,it's made by cat,anyone ever use this brand name?I looked at it and machine work looks good.And the price is right.The guy is out of money(lost job).crank is still in box $125.

Sounds like a very good price even if it has to be reground if it may possibly be off some.

Car,
Ask your machine shop how much they think it will cost to balance it. Some of the real cheap aftermarket cranks end up costing more in heavy metal by the time you are done. Call CAT and see if they can give you a target bob weight for the crank.

Found out that both scat and cat are import cranks.Anyone running a cat crank?

a year or so ago when i was discussing cranks with my machinist buddy, he said back when they were introduced, scat had issues, but are now real good, and eagle has always been decent for him, but to avoid cat cranks. he said as of yet (a year or so ago) they were still seeing issues, he didn't specify what. things could have changed by now, but i'd definately do some research on them.
