When starting my 68, there is a slight pause or delay. Sounds like the battery is under more than normal load or maybe the starter has trouble turning for a half sec or so. I am just guessing here but wanted to get some opinions. Thanks much!

Make sure that battery cables are clean ... do a load test on the battery ... many auto stores will do that for you ... you may just have a weak battery and need to replace it

The armature may be dragging due to a worn end plate bearing.
New end plates or replacemnt bearings are readily available. You could try turning the end plate 180deg to see if the drag changes - it won't fix all the problems, but may tell you if your on the right track, this can be done without removing the starter.
Dirty/worn contact plate or contacts in the solenoid can cause hard start issues also.
I would also recommend you have the starter current draw tested to see if it's in spec.

You could just have a touch more initial timing than you should. Is the problem worse or better when the motor is hot?

You must make sure the cables, inside and outside, and their connections are clean and of the proper wire gauge to handle the load.

If the battery is over a couple years old, it sometimes takes a second for itself to start and ramp-up the chemical reaction to handle the current load requested.

Jim,
Now that you mention, it seems to occur when the car is warm or been recently driven.
